Mommy and Me yoga classes have become very popular in the Los Angeles area. Doing yoga with a baby you love can create long life lasting connections.
Getting Ready for Yoga
I have had the privilege of my sister and her 6 month year old baby visiting us in Los Angeles for a few weeks. As a new mom, my sister is always looking for ways to slip in some conscious movement. Movements that are good for the mind and body.
Since I only had them in town for ten days, I must admit, I didn’t want to let my nephew out of my sight! The last time I saw him was when he was born, 5 months ago.
I busted out my yoga mat and borrowed my nephew to practice some yoga moves. The moves below are baby, mommy and Auntie (me) approved. All of the poses help strengthen the abdominal muscles, a big plus after giving birth.
Anyone who carries a baby needs a good squat. Care givers, friends, nurses, moms, dads and grandparents alike. Even after holding my nephew for a few days, I began to round my upper back and slouch. Incorrect posture can lead to a wide range of health issues later on in life.
Malasa, a low squat, is wonderful for keeping your hip joints healthy, aids in digestion and strengthens back muscles.
Hold the baby and squat up and down 5-15 times
So many new moms are relentlessly working on getting their tummy muscles back. Practicing yoga sit ups assist in strengthening the core from the inside out. Add a baby to the mix, its even more challenging. Make sure you don’t hold your breath, breathe deeply in and out through your nose.
Start sitting up go all the down bone by bone, then come back up10-20 times
My sister told me she wanted to lose her baby weight. So we headed to Fryman Canyon with the baby in the Ergo (an attachment to hold the baby in, hands free). Once we arrived at the canyon I put on the Ergo and up the hills we went. I enjoyed the extra workout, it felt great. However, when I got home, I could feel a little tension in my lower back.
Practicing the Wide Angle Seated Forward Fold, Upavistha Konasana, stretches the spine, calms the brain and releases the groins.
Reach forward and hold onto the beautiful baby!
Enjoy practicing these yoga poses with your baby, your siblings baby or your friend’s baby. Along with self care, this will create deeper bonds between you and the little one. Now I have pictures of my youngest nephew practicing yoga just in case he refuses to practice in the future:)
