The month of May is very special to me. Two events that rock my world are in May, Mothers Day and my birthday! My world would not be the same without my beautiful mom. Of course I wouldn’t be here! Plus, my first birthday was on Mother’s Day. So mom, myself and the month of May have a special connection.
The compassion, inner and outer beauty and selflessness my mother embodies is out of this world. It really is unearthly (mom said no pictures allowed so just imagine).
My parents stayed with us in Los Angeles the winter months in 2013, 2014 and 2015. These visits allow our adult relationship to flourish. The growth in our relationship was accompanied by loads of laughs, peace and at times disagreements that stretched our minds and hearts.
Through the ups and downs mom and I now have a more loving and honest relationship. No one wants to go through life like a fraud, especially with the person who birthed you into this world.
My yoga practice influences my entire life, especially my close relationships. Yoga constantly reminds me of life and life reminds me of yoga.
Mom, who is almost 80 and I, in my late 30’s, continually evolve as we live on separate ends of the country. There is, in a sense, a reintroduction to one another during our three months together.
We do have a typical mother daughter relationship. We respect and love one another dearly. We also disagree on a few things. For example, we’ve had many discussions about spirituality versus religion. We at times bicker about from living from a place of realism versus living from your dreams.
We’ve lead very different lives and we obviously see the world through various lenses. When it comes down to the core, we of course at the end of the day, are saying almost the same freakin’ thing!
The important aspects of a close personal relationship and our yoga practice are one in the same. Although there are many, here is my top AHA with my mama:)
My top AHA!
When you are not seeing eye to eye with a loved one, its important to have a sacred conversation starting from a place of HONESTY and COMPASSION. We all know what happens when we sweep issues under the rug. We also know what occurs when we go berserk and have a tantrum. Inner child issues ring a bell?
How does this apply to yoga? Oh my goodness. When we wake up and our bodies feel crappy, we have a choice. We can ignore our body temples and skip practice. Usually we skip until we get a bigger wake up call. Chronic pain and or chronic fatigue to name a few. Then we dare say, how did this happen?
We can also choose to practice and bulldoze through the movements. Telling our bodies, you are going to do what I want you to do so suck it up! This approach hurts our bodies and will lead to injury.
Or we can choose to simply be PRESENT. Being present is a common phrase in the yoga world so make sure you remember what this implies.
Definition from the dictionary: A moment or period in time perceptible as intermediate between past and future, now.
I encourage you to listen to you body and let your intuition guide your moving meditation. This last approach always bring the best results.
What do I do? Lately life has been so full that I time my morning routine. When I am in a crunch, I get up and meditate for 20 minutes. Then I practice yoga for 30 minutes. Sometimes I have a plan and other times I just let my body flow.
This is non negotiable. I do love my visioning and journalling practices too. However, when time is tight and I want to set a a positive tone for the day, yoga and meditation are key. Through practice, you will see what works best for your body and life.
Yoga Tip
I am PROUD so say that mom had her very first yoga practice taught by me this past April on the beach in Southern Cali. It was about time! Mom’s favorite pose was Child’s Pose. If you practice yoga and have been dying for a loved one to join you, keep the faith everything happens in divine timing.
