Living it up solo in quarantine for the past several months, I started thinking about the power and the privilege of the human touch.
The Simple
- A big, huge hug from a good friend. The kind where you sway back and forth and back and forth because you’re so happy to see each other.
- Giving a great yoga adjustment to my students. The ones that are subtle but deep, shifting you in a way you just can’t seem to do on your own.
- Hanging out with elderly parents without the worry of getting them severely ill.
- The routine dap, aka a greeting, with the security guard you’ve become cool with over the years.
Then I started thinking about my last family visit to Cleveland, Ohio in December. It was….
A Profound Experience
On a snowy evening, I drove to the country to visit my Aunt and Uncle.
It’s way out there by corn fields and vineyards. You may see the Amish on their horse and buggy.
Close friends and family gathered in the living room by my Uncle’s bedside.
After battling tongue cancer for a grueling three months, he was on hospice.
A few hours into the visit, I held my Uncle’s right hand and my cousin held his left hand.
Even though we knew the end was near, we still thought we had a few more hours.
It felt so sudden as he took his last peaceful breath.
To be present, holding his hand, was an honor that is indescribable.
Depending on the intention, touch can be compassionate and therapeutic.
Let’s stay open and aware as we move forward.
Do you know that today is National Loving Day?
On June 12th we celebrate the US Supreme Court’s 1967 decision to strike down laws that banned interracial marriage, like my Aunt and Uncle’s marriage. The were the epitome of soul mates.
I’m with you in creating a world that benefits us all.
Lots of Love,
Cindi
