The Women’s March on January 21st, 2017 was a prominent day in LA and the world. The estimated 750,000 women and men who showed up to support women’s rights was overwhelming. All honored to be a part of that day which represented determination, inspiration and a united front. It was thrilling to March with fellow yogis and people of various professional and ethnic backgrounds. Women’s health and healing is intricate to an evolving society. We all need to tune into our bodies AND stay well informed.
Like many of the women, kind of by mistake, focus on health and wellbeing was a result of practicing yoga. Why? Short answer. At age 22, I never felt so damn good, naturally, in all of my life! Waking up with energy after a long day of getting my hustle on, what a concept. Going through my hectic LA day, bombarded with a whole lot of stimulation, with less drama and more flow. I was completely floored that my all over the place moon cycle became regular and painless. Unexpected weight loss occurred. Clearer skin. This coupled with learning to eat clean and simple, continues to help with agility and strength I thought were only available to dancers and athletes. When practiced with the right combination, the benefits are undeniable.
Over the years, the disconnect between women and our optimal health is understandable. Not only is a confusing health regime making life, at times, miserable, it is depleting our finances. An article in Huffington Post states, “Women pay $1 billion more each year in individual health insurance costs even though they tend take better care of their health than men…” . Bottom line, we were not created to suffer because we have lady parts. We’ve become disconnected, have been lied to, put through the ringer and grossly misinformed. As daughters, mothers, sisters and grandmothers. etc…we’ve had enough.
When we believe we deserve better, we do better. Our bodies are constantly shifting. We’ve got to tune in and honor those shifts. Maybe its changing our yoga practice, changing our diet, changing our job or making changes in our relationships. Of course we all fall off track. Our path is just a lot less bumpy when we choose to commit to our health and wellbeing.
