I was thrilled to come a cross an article I recently read via Facebook about a new yoga studio in the San Francisco airport. What a fantastic idea! Waiting in lines, long layovers, experiencing delays, and god forbid flight cancellations can make traveling very stressful. Practicing yoga can bring peace of mind to your journey.
The stress along with the nasty bacteria and viruses festering in airports and airplanes, this is a recipe for your immune system to breakdown. A broken down immune system can result in colds, flues, aches, and unnecessary pains. Then when we arrive at our destination we have to lay around in bed and/or risk getting everyone else around us sick. Not a great way to spend your vacation.
Like a lot of people in Los Angeles, I travel frequently. Being a transplant, my parents, my bother, and my sister all live in different states and countries. Plus I travel frequently around the globe for workshops and yoga retreats. Then the friends who get married every year, wait I diverged. We all know it is great to getaway, we often come back more connected. Therefore, it is imperative we take responsibility for our health before, during, and after our trip.
When I am leading a yoga retreat, I especially want to make sure I show up present, open, and grounded when I arrive. It’s not like I have the liberty in saying, “Sorry folks, I need time to adjust, give me a few days and then I’ll start teaching the yoga classes.”
This past April I was fortunate to travel to Sayulita, Mexico for a Yoga Surf Retreat. For the second year in a row, I instructed the yoga and meditation portion of the retreat! While I was waiting for my flight to board at LAX, I decided to do some yoga. Depending on what time of the day it is and how many people are around, my airport yoga practice varies. Sometimes I am feeling bold and I do what I feel my body needs to do no matter what. Other times I just try to sneak it in, I get embarrassed too.
Ahhh, finally, let’s twist. Twists stretch your spine and they massage your internal organs. Twists are very cleansing, especially if you are eating airplane food:) Twisting poses are best done on an empty stomach so be careful if you chowed down before coming to the airport. Soak in this final Spinal Twist.
